Block Periodization and Intensity Distribution for Endurance
For endurance, block periodization shows a reproducible small-to-moderate advantage over traditional periodization, and pyramidal or polarized intensity distributions outperform threshold training; for novices the model chosen does not materially matter.

Fitness Improves With Any Sufficiently Dosed Modality
Many exercise modes improve cardiorespiratory fitness in the sources on this entry, from walking (Oja 2018) and water-based training (Faíl 2021) to Pilates at sufficient dose (Pessôa 2023) and exercise snacks (Rodríguez 2025); for sport, Oliveira 2022 concludes that "Sport may have a positive impact on health outcomes in people aged 60+" and Oja 2015 reports VO2max gains but that "the evidence base appears currently underdeveloped in both quantity and quality"; structured exercise regardless of type was effective in older adults (Azimkhani 2025).

HIIT Compared With Volume-Matched Moderate Continuous Training
Interval training often yields the largest fitness gains and is more time-efficient, but is not strictly necessary where adequate volume is achieved at moderate intensity; intensity and amount can substitute for one another.

HIIT Improves Cardiometabolic and Vascular Risk Factors
Meta-analyses report that HIIT lowered blood pressure (Edwards 2023; Carpes 2021), improved flow-mediated dilation against continuous training and controls in people with metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases but not in those free of cardiometabolic diseases (Khalafi 2022) and against continuous training in groups including people with heart failure, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, coronary artery disease or type 2 diabetes (Ramos 2015), improved HDL cholesterol but not other lipids relative to continuous training (Wood 2019), improved hemostatic and arterial-stiffness markers (Jiao 2025) and can enhance mitochondrial indices in overweight and obese adults (Hadjispyrou 2023).

HIIT and Cardiorespiratory Fitness: What the Reviews Report
Syntheses report that interval training raised VO2max, with gains greater than endurance training in healthy adults (Milanović 2015), more effective than moderate continuous training in older adults (Yang 2023; Poon 2021), effective at home in healthy adults and patients (Tsuji 2023), and, in overweight or obese persons, moderate continuous training better than sprint intervals with no significant difference from HIIT (Rugbeer 2021).
