Training raises mitochondrial content and respiratory capacity in skeletal muscle, and this is part of why endurance improves. Two caveats keep it from being a confident claim. The adaptation is not specific to any one training zone: content rises by a similar amount across easy, hard and sprint training. And this is the most popularly discussed and least well graded theme in the low-intensity literature, so treat the mechanism as plausible background rather than a lever you can aim at.
