Cardio & Endurance Training: What It Is and What Drives Results

An orientation to aerobic (cardiovascular) training and the dose variables, frequency, intensity, time, and type, that determine adaptation.

Cardiorespiratory (aerobic) training repeatedly loads the heart, lungs, and working muscles so they adapt to deliver and use oxygen more efficiently, raising cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). Across large bodies of randomized and pooled evidence, both moderate-intensity continuous training and higher-intensity interval training reliably raise VO2peak/CRF, with intensity, total volume, and consistency the main levers. Results scale with the dose applied; there is no single protocol that is optimal for every goal or person.
