Cardio and Brain/Cognitive Health

Aerobic training is associated with improved cognitive function, particularly in older adults.

Evidence suggests…

Systematic reviews find aerobic exercise can improve aspects of cognitive function in older adults, though effects vary by domain and study quality. The honest limit is that raising fitness does not reliably carry through to brain outcomes: multi-year trials that clearly improved VO2peak did not beat guideline-level activity on brain structure, brain chemistry, or cognitive testing. Fitness is worth pursuing on its own merits, and cognitive benefit is a plausible bonus rather than a demonstrated return.

Common misconceptions
  • 'Only brain games help cognition' (physical activity matters too)
  • 'Exercise reverses dementia' (it does not)
What we won't claim
  • No cure claims for any disease
  • No guaranteed outcomes or fixed numeric results for any individual
  • Does not replace prescribed medical treatment
  • Does not prevent or cure dementia or Alzheimer's disease
When to seek a professional
  • Chest pain, pressure, or unusual shortness of breath during exertion
  • Fainting, dizziness, or palpitations with exercise
  • Known or suspected cardiovascular, metabolic, or renal disease without medical clearance
  • Concerns about memory or cognition warrant clinical assessment
