VO2max and Aerobic Adaptation

VO2max is the ceiling of oxygen your body can use, and training reliably raises it.

Research consistently shows…

VO2max/VO2peak reflects the integrated capacity to deliver and use oxygen and is the most-studied marker of aerobic fitness. Randomized trials and pooled analyses show aerobic and interval training raise VO2peak across a wide range of populations. Higher-intensity work tends to produce larger gains than matched-volume moderate work, though individual trainability varies widely. The physiological route, how much comes from the heart and how much from the muscle, is not settled in the research reviewed for this library.

Common misconceptions
  • 'VO2max is fixed by genetics' (it is trainable, though the size of response varies)
  • 'Only elite athletes should care about VO2max' (it predicts health in the general population)
What we won't claim
  • No cure claims for any disease
  • No guaranteed outcomes or fixed numeric results for any individual
  • Does not replace prescribed medical treatment
  • No promise of a specific VO2max number
When to seek a professional
  • Chest pain, pressure, or unusual shortness of breath during exertion
  • Fainting, dizziness, or palpitations with exercise
  • Known or suspected cardiovascular, metabolic, or renal disease without medical clearance
