Short-interval HIIT protocols repeat brief vigorous efforts with matched recoveries and reliably improve CRF and cardiometabolic health with modest total time. Reviews of different HIIT protocols show short intervals are effective and often better tolerated than all-out sprints. They let beginners-to-intermediate trainees access high-intensity benefits.

Common misconceptions
- 'All HIIT is all-out sprinting' (short intervals are submaximal-to-hard)
- 'Two minutes of hard work replaces all training' (it complements a base)
