Age-Related Decline in Force, Power and Postural Control, and the Adjunct Modalities Studied
Reviews and trials on the neuromuscular changes of ageing and on adjunct training modalities: Granacher 2008 reports reduced maximal and explosive force and postural control with ageing, McKinnon 2017 reports that power deficits are more pronounced with aging than strength loss and may be a more sensitive marker, and trials report that strength and flexibility declined after three months of detraining (Carvalho 2008) and that older women were unable to maintain cardio-respiratory fitness, lipid, glycemic and hemodynamic profiles after three months of detraining (Leitão 2019).

Exercise With Protein Support in Older Adults
For muscle mass, strength and sarcopenia-related mobility in older adults, the sources on this entry compare exercise with and without protein or other nutritional support: network meta-analyses rank exercise plus nutrition highest (Zhao 2025; Lin 2026), while Sirikul 2024 concludes that “the efficacy of nutritional supplements remains unclear” and Kim 2025 reports that the benefits of nutritional interventions remain limited.

Exercise and Other Non-Drug Approaches to Sleep: What the Reviews Compared
Sella 2022 reports that only physical activity improved objectively measured sleep in older adults, Riedel 2024 reports exercise improved objective and subjective sleep in insomnia with larger effects at higher intensity, and the reviews of other non-drug approaches report results ranging from effective (acupuncture, Hu 2023) to mixed (nutrition, Knowlden 2016) and inconclusive (single-plant herbal aids, Kim 2018).

Fitness Improves With Any Sufficiently Dosed Modality
Many exercise modes improve cardiorespiratory fitness in the sources on this entry, from walking (Oja 2018) and water-based training (Faíl 2021) to Pilates at sufficient dose (Pessôa 2023) and exercise snacks (Rodríguez 2025); for sport, Oliveira 2022 concludes that "Sport may have a positive impact on health outcomes in people aged 60+" and Oja 2015 reports VO2max gains but that "the evidence base appears currently underdeveloped in both quantity and quality"; structured exercise regardless of type was effective in older adults (Azimkhani 2025).

HIIT Improves Cardiometabolic and Vascular Risk Factors
Meta-analyses report that HIIT lowered blood pressure (Edwards 2023; Carpes 2021), improved flow-mediated dilation against continuous training and controls in people with metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases but not in those free of cardiometabolic diseases (Khalafi 2022) and against continuous training in groups including people with heart failure, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, coronary artery disease or type 2 diabetes (Ramos 2015), improved HDL cholesterol but not other lipids relative to continuous training (Wood 2019), improved hemostatic and arterial-stiffness markers (Jiao 2025) and can enhance mitochondrial indices in overweight and obese adults (Hadjispyrou 2023).

Loneliness Interventions: What the Reviews Found, and Where They Differ
Reviews of loneliness interventions differ: several meta-analyses report reduced loneliness (Yu 2023; Hansen 2025; Coppola 2025; Teoh 2021; Yang 2025), others report effects that were not statistically significant or were limited (Grillich 2023; Jarvis 2020; Coll-Planas 2016), and group-based, participatory and theory-based formats more often reported improved outcomes (Dickens 2011).

Napping: Benefits and Trade-offs
Cohort syntheses report long daytime napping of an hour or more associated with cardiovascular risk and mortality (Sun 2022, which describes the evidence for most meta-analyses as weak or suggestive), coronary heart disease (Salari 2022) and all-cause mortality (Liu 2015), and daytime napping associated with stroke in a dose-dependent manner (Jin 2021), while Du 2026 reports that napping under 60 minutes maximised cognitive enhancement (SMD 0.69) and napping over 60 minutes correlated with a 30% higher risk of coronary heart disease.

Plant-Based Patterns: Benefit Is Conditional on Food Quality
Cohort meta-analyses report higher adherence to plant-based patterns associated with lower type 2 diabetes risk, strengthened when built from healthful plant foods (Qian 2019), and healthy plant-based indices associated with lower cardiovascular disease and mortality while unhealthy indices are associated with higher cardiovascular risk (Zhang 2025; Quek 2021); evidence specific to vegan diets is described as very limited (Schlesinger 2022).

Poor Sleep by Population: Prevalence and What the Trials Found
Dinis 2018 (systematic review) reports poor sleep quality affecting 10-50% of college students, and pooled prevalence meta-analyses report poor sleep quality in 51% of police officers (Garbarino 2019), 69% of military personnel and veterans (Bai 2023) and 52.30% of pregnant women in Ethiopia (Zeleke 2024). Meta-analyses report CBT-I effective in menopausal women (Moon 2025), pregnant women (Zheng 2022; Visvanathan 2025) and daytime workers (Takano 2023), and possibly effective in older adults (Huang 2022); in shift workers Slanger 2016 could not determine whether interventions reduce sleepiness, and Nickel 2025 reports student sleep-education programs improved knowledge and sleep quality but not sleep duration.

When and how consistently you sleep carries health signal beyond total hours: irregular timing tracks with worse cardiometabolic markers, higher dementia risk and higher mortality, and social jet lag with obesity and depression.

Scott 2021 (meta-analysis, 65 trials) reports that improving sleep produced medium effects on composite mental health, depression, anxiety and rumination, and Takano 2023 reports CBT-I improved depression and anxiety in daytime workers; CBT-I's effect on depressive symptoms is reported as significant by Palagini 2024 and as a possible positive effect by Ballesio 2018.

Reviews and trials of Tai Chi, exergaming and virtual reality, perturbation-based and stepping training and dual-task training for balance in older adults: each is reported to improve balance or reduce falls in its own sources, and one trial reports functional-task training as more effective than resistance training for balance (Mohammed 2021).

The Mediterranean Pattern: What the Reviews Report
A pattern rich in vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, olive oil, nuts and fish: cohort meta-analyses report higher adherence associated with lower all-cause mortality (Sofi 2010; Bonaccio 2018; and Soltani 2019, which reports that low-quality evidence from prospective cohorts suggests an inverse association), a meta-analysis of randomised trials reports reduced major adverse cardiovascular events but no significant effect on all-cause mortality (Sebastian 2024), and an umbrella review reports robust evidence for mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer incidence, neurodegenerative disease and diabetes (Dinu 2018).

Time-Efficient (Minimal-Dose) Training
Exercise need not be continuous or long to improve fitness: accumulated short bouts match continuous exercise, and low-volume interval formats improve fitness, though claims about very-low-volume formats should stay measured.
