Emerging cohort and actigraphy research links irregular sleep timing and social jet lag to worse cardiometabolic markers and mortality risk, sometimes independent of sleep duration. Evidence is growing but younger than the duration literature, and mostly observational. Regularity is presented as a modifiable habit that supports the body clock.

Common misconceptions
- “Only total hours matter.” Timing regularity appears to matter independently.
- “Weekend catch-up erases weekday debt.” Large weekend shifts create social jet lag.

- Difficulty falling or staying asleep at least 3 nights/week for 3+ months with daytime impairment (possible chronic insomnia disorder), refer to a clinician
- Excessive daytime sleepiness despite adequate time in bed, or falling asleep involuntarily during activities, refer to a clinician
- Persistent inability to sleep/wake at socially desired times despite good habits (possible circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorder), refer to a clinician
