Near vs far transfer: the honest limits of brain training
Practice makes you better at the practiced task (near transfer). Broad gains to everyday thinking (far transfer) are weak and contested.
This is the most important honesty block in the dimension. High-quality reviews agree on two things. First, NEAR transfer is real: cognitive training reliably improves performance on the trained task and closely related tasks (moderate-strength evidence in cognitively normal adults). Second, FAR transfer is weak: evidence that brain-training generalizes to everyday memory, reasoning, or real-world function is inconsistent, low-quality, or insufficient. A US-government evidence review found training improved the trained domain but was insufficient to show it prevents decline; a review of 75 trials found 'inconsistent evidence of transfer'; a Cochrane review rated the evidence low-quality. We grade this C by rule: far-transfer claims are not supported. Commercial brain-training products that promise general 'sharper thinking' overstate the science.
