Aging and the Decline of Balance

Why balance and reactive control decline with age, and why that decline is largely modifiable.

With age, losses in muscle power, sensory acuity, and processing speed slow the reactions that keep us upright, raising fall risk. Yet trials consistently show older adults retain the capacity to improve balance and even reshape neural control through training. Age raises risk but does not remove trainability, making targeted balance and power work a high-value intervention in later life.

  • 'Declining balance is unavoidable with age' (much of it responds to training)
  • 'Older adults should only do gentle, slow exercise' (safe power/speed work is especially valuable)
