Bone is a living tissue that strengthens in response to mechanical load, and progressive resistance training is a key stimulus for building and preserving bone mineral density (BMD). Evidence links resistance training - especially higher-intensity, progressive loading of the hips and spine - with improved or maintained BMD and greater lean mass, which together lower fracture and fall risk, particularly in post-menopausal women and older adults. Bone adapts slowly, so consistency over months and years and sufficient load are the operative principles.
- Myth: Only weight-bearing cardio like walking builds bone. Actually: Progressive resistance loading is a stronger stimulus for bone than light aerobic activity, especially at the hip and spine.
