When More Recovery Is Not Better

Blunting the stress of training can blunt the adaptation to it, so routine recovery interventions are situational rather than default.

Evidence suggests that the inflammation and stress a hard session produces are part of how the body adapts to it, and that suppressing them routinely can reduce the gain. Reviews report that regular cold-water immersion in hypertrophy-focused resistance training may reduce muscle growth and adaptive signalling, and that anti-inflammatory drugs reduce strength at 48 hours. We grade this B because the adaptation-interference signal is consistent in direction but drawn from a small number of reviews, and because the size of the trade-off is not established. The practical reading is to use recovery interventions when the next session matters more than the current adaptation, and to leave them alone otherwise.
