Evidence suggests that manual and mechanical recovery methods work on soreness and perception rather than on output. The largest meta-analysis of recovery techniques, covering ninety-nine studies, found massage the most effective single modality for reducing soreness and fatigue, with compression and immersion also producing soreness reductions and modest cuts in inflammatory markers. Foam rolling produces small improvements in flexibility and perceived recovery. We grade this B because the perceptual benefit is consistent while performance effects are small and inconsistent across the same reviews.
