Cold-Water Immersion

Cold immersion reliably reduces muscle soreness after hard training, and reliably does less for performance than people expect.

Research consistently shows cold-water immersion reduces delayed-onset muscle soreness compared with resting passively, with the best results from water around 10 to 15 degrees Celsius for 10 to 15 minutes. Pooled analyses also show it lowers creatine kinase, a marker of muscle damage. What it does not reliably do is restore performance: jump and maximal-strength outcomes are frequently null or mixed across the same reviews, and partial immersion has impaired immediate jump performance. Treat it as a tool for feeling better sooner rather than for performing better sooner.

This is the evidence-based dose. A shorter session still counts, it just gives partial benefit rather than the full effect.

  • Misconception: 'It speeds up recovery of strength and power.' Soreness improves; performance outcomes are frequently null.
