Perturbation-based balance training rehearses recovery from sudden losses of balance and has been shown to reduce falls in daily life, sometimes after relatively few sessions. Because the drills deliberately provoke near-falls, they should be done in a safe setup, harness, treadmill system, or with a trained spotter, progressing from gentle to more unpredictable perturbations.

Common misconceptions
- 'Never let yourself almost fall' (controlled near-falls are the training stimulus)
- 'One session is enough' (reactions need repeated varied practice)
