Leg Power & Sit-to-Stand Training

A progressive routine of sit-to-stands, step-ups, and fast-tempo leg work to build the power balance recovery needs.

This routine develops leg strength and power, force produced quickly, through sit-to-stands, step-ups, and controlled fast-tempo movements. Power declines faster than strength with age, which is the reason to train it deliberately, and power-oriented work improves functional capacity related to fall risk. Whether fast training beats conventional strength training for those outcomes has not been settled, so treat this as a complement to balance and strength work rather than a replacement for either.

This is the evidence-based dose. A shorter session still counts, it just gives partial benefit rather than the full effect.
Common misconceptions
  • 'Older adults shouldn't move fast' (safe fast/power reps are especially beneficial)
  • 'Strength alone fixes balance' (power and balance practice are both needed)

  • Not a substitute for medical evaluation of dizziness, syncope, or unexplained falls

When to seek a professional
  • Two or more falls in the past 12 months, or any fall with injury
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting during standing or movement
  • New or worsening unsteadiness, neurological symptoms, or numbness in the feet
  • Fear of falling severe enough to restrict daily activity
