Leg Strength and Power Underpin Balance

Why muscle power, force produced quickly, is often the limiting factor for balance recovery and fall avoidance.

Standing, recovering from a stumble, and stepping quickly all require the legs to generate force rapidly. Muscle power declines faster than strength with age and is closely tied to physical function and fall risk. Resistance and especially power (fast) training improves functional capacity relevant to fall risk, complementing balance-specific practice.

  • 'Balance is only about the inner ear' (leg power is a major, trainable contributor)
  • 'Older adults shouldn't lift or move fast' (power training is safe and valuable when progressed)
