Dose-Response: How Much Balance Training Reduces Falls

Why total hours and level of challenge, not just doing 'some' exercise, determine fall-reduction benefit.

Research consistently shows…

Evidence indicates a dose-response relationship: programs delivering more total hours of balance and functional exercise, and those that challenge balance more, achieve larger fall reductions. The best-supported threshold is weekly rather than cumulative, at more than about 3 hours per week of genuinely balance-challenging work sustained over months. Ongoing practice is needed to maintain the effect.

  • 'A little balance work now and then prevents falls' (meaningful effects need substantial cumulative dose)
  • 'Once improved, you can stop' (benefits fade without continued practice)
