Social Isolation and Physical Health
Having few social contacts (isolation) is objectively linked to higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and early death.
Beta content. Evidence for this dimension is still developing; grade is conservative and will be upgraded as more research is reviewed.

Research consistently shows…
Distinct from loneliness (a feeling), isolation is the objective state of limited contact, and its association with cardiovascular disease and mortality is well replicated. Evidence remains observational; isolation often co-occurs with poverty, disability, and illness, which independently harm health. The takeaway is that structural connection matters, not that isolation alone causes disease in a given person.

Common misconceptions
- Myth: isolation and loneliness are the same. Reality: you can be isolated but content, or surrounded but lonely.
- Myth: introverts are unhealthily isolated. Reality: preferred solitude is different from unwanted isolation.
What we won't claim
- Do not claim isolation directly causes disease in an individual
- Do not conflate chosen solitude with harmful isolation
When to seek a professional
- Persistent loneliness or isolation accompanied by low mood, hopelessness, loss of interest, or withdrawal lasting 2+ weeks → encourage contact with a primary care provider or mental health professional
- Thoughts of self-harm or that life is not worth living → direct to crisis line / emergency services immediately
