Strength Training for Women

Resistance training builds strength, muscle, bone and body composition in women just as reliably as in men.

Research consistently shows...

Women adapt to resistance training much like men: reviews of training in women show robust gains in dynamic strength and muscle, and resistance training preserves lean mass and supports bone health, which is especially valuable for post-menopausal women facing accelerated bone and muscle loss. Relative strength gains are comparable to men's, and typical female hormonal profiles mean the common fear of becoming 'bulky' is unfounded. The same variables - load, volume, effort, progression - govern results.

This is the evidence-based dose. A shorter session still counts, it just gives partial benefit rather than the full effect.
Common misconceptions
  • Myth: Lifting weights makes women bulky. Actually: Typical female physiology means resistance training builds strength and tone, not unwanted bulk, for the vast majority.
  • Myth: Women should only do light 'toning' weights. Actually: Women respond to the same effective loads and volumes as men; challenging training drives the best strength, bone and composition results.
