Proximity to Failure (Reps in Reserve)

Proximity to failure - often tracked as reps in reserve (RIR) or velocity loss - describes how hard each set is. Evidence indicates that for hypertrophy you need to work reasonably close to failure (roughly 0-3 reps short), while for strength stopping a few reps shy preserves bar speed and technique with little cost. Training consistently to absolute failure adds fatigue and injury risk without proportional gains, so most guidance now frames a moderate proximity to failure as the sweet spot.

  • Myth: Every set must go to complete failure to work. Actually: Sets stopped a few reps short grow muscle nearly as well with far less fatigue and lower injury risk.
