Strength Training: Overview
What resistance training is, the core adaptations it drives, and the handful of variables that determine results.
Resistance (strength) training is the deliberate use of external load to force skeletal muscle to adapt. Across hundreds of controlled trials and meta-analyses it reliably increases maximal strength, muscle size, lean mass, bone density and physical function in populations from untrained young adults to frail elders. The adaptations are not driven by any single 'best' program but by a small set of manipulable variables - load/intensity, weekly volume (sets), frequency, proximity to failure, exercise selection and progressive overload - each of which has its own dose-response evidence. Understanding these levers lets a person evaluate any program or product claim against what the science actually supports.
- Myth: You need to train like a bodybuilder to benefit. Actually: Meaningful strength, function and health gains occur with brief, simple programs; elaborate routines are optional, not required.
- Myth: Machines, free weights, bands or bodyweight each give totally different results. Actually: When load and effort are matched, very different equipment produces similar strength and hypertrophy gains.
