Large pooled analyses of more than a million adults link both short and long habitual sleep to higher all-cause mortality and cardiometabolic disease, and a multi-society consensus recommends 7 or more hours per night for most adults. The relationship is consistent across many prospective cohorts, though most evidence is observational and cannot prove sleep itself is the sole cause. This overview frames sleep as a modifiable pillar of general health, not a treatment for any disorder.

Common misconceptions
- “Everyone needs exactly 8 hours.” Need varies; 7–9 h is a population range, not a personal prescription.
- “You can fully bank or repay lost sleep on weekends.” Recovery is partial and irregular catch-up can worsen timing.
