Why both too little and too much habitual sleep track with higher risk across mortality, heart, and metabolic outcomes.

Research consistently shows…
Meta-analyses of prospective cohorts show a U- or J-shaped association: risk of death, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes is lowest around 7–8 hours and rises with both shorter and longer sleep. Effects are consistent in direction across dozens of studies and millions of participants. Because the data are observational, long sleep may partly be a marker of underlying illness rather than a cause.

Common misconceptions
- “More sleep is always better.” Very long habitual sleep also tracks with higher risk.
- “Five hours is fine if you feel okay.” Perceived tolerance does not remove measured risk.

- Do not present these general hygiene techniques as clinical therapy (e.g., CBT-I) or a substitute for medical care
When to seek a professional
- Loud snoring with witnessed gasping/choking or breathing pauses plus daytime sleepiness (possible obstructive sleep apnea), refer to a clinician
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep at least 3 nights/week for 3+ months with daytime impairment (possible chronic insomnia disorder), refer to a clinician
- Excessive daytime sleepiness despite adequate time in bed, or falling asleep involuntarily during activities, refer to a clinician
