Stretch Tolerance vs. Real Tissue Change

Research consistently shows…
A large share of acute and short-term ROM improvement reflects increased stretch tolerance (a sensory/perceptual change) rather than lasting mechanical lengthening of the tissue. Longer training periods can also reduce passive stiffness, but mechanisms are mixed and depend on dose. Understanding this prevents overstretching in pursuit of tissue change that may not be occurring.

- ROM gains always mean the muscle got longer, often it is increased tolerance to the stretch sensation.
- If it does not hurt, it is not working, tolerance improves without pain.
