Static vs. Dynamic Stretching: Different Tools

Dynamic stretching preserves or improves performance; static builds ROM but is better saved for after or away from power work.

Research consistently shows…

Grade-A reviews show dynamic stretching maintains or slightly improves subsequent power and sprint performance, while long static holds can transiently reduce it. For building long-term flexibility, both work; for warming up before performance, dynamic is generally favored. Neither is universally "better" (they serve different goals).

Common misconceptions
  • Dynamic stretching builds more flexibility than static, for ROM they are comparable; dynamic mainly protects performance.
  • Static stretching is always bad, it is fine post-exercise or on its own.
What we won't claim
  • Dynamic stretching prevents injury where static does not.
When to seek a professional
  • Persistent joint pain or sudden loss of range of motion, refer to a physician or physical therapist.
