Bilingualism and the brain: a genuinely contested area
Claims that speaking two languages protects the aging brain are mixed, prospective studies are mostly null; retrospective ones suggest delayed dementia symptoms.
Bilingualism is one of the most debated topics in cognitive aging, and we present it honestly as CONTESTED. Prospective cohort studies, the stronger design, generally find NO protective effect on dementia risk (pooled OR 0.96, non-significant). A meta-analysis found lifelong bilingualism and late-life language learning did not enhance cognitive functioning. Yet retrospective clinical studies repeatedly report bilinguals showing dementia symptoms about 3-4 years later, consistent with a reserve/compensation effect. Neuroimaging shows second-language learning can shift functional connectivity. Because the strongest designs are null and the positive findings are prone to confounding, we grade C. Learn a language for connection, culture, and enjoyment, the cognitive-protection claim is not settled.
