Square-stepping exercise uses a floor grid on which participants learn and reproduce stepping patterns of increasing complexity. Studies show improvements in motor and cognitive function in older adults, combining balance, coordination, and memory. It is low-cost, safe, and progresses simply by lengthening and speeding up the patterns.

Common misconceptions
- 'Stepping on a grid is trivial' (patterns train coordination and memory together)
- 'You must memorize instantly' (patterns build up gradually)

When to seek a professional
- Two or more falls in the past 12 months, or any fall with injury
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting during standing or movement
- New or worsening unsteadiness, neurological symptoms, or numbness in the feet
- Fear of falling severe enough to restrict daily activity
