Chair-Based & Seated-to-Standing Balance (Frailer Adults)

A gentle chair-supported routine building toward standing balance for deconditioned or frailer older adults.

For frailer or very deconditioned older adults, this routine begins with seated movements and chair-supported standing work, progressing toward brief unsupported standing balance. Evidence supports exercise, including seated and multicomponent formats, for improving function in adults with reduced physical capacity or frailty. It provides a safe on-ramp to the more demanding balance practices.

Common misconceptions
  • 'Too frail to exercise' (seated and supported training still builds function safely)
  • 'Seated work is pointless for balance' (it is a valid stepping stone to standing balance)
