A maximal-strength program targets the most weight you can lift once (1RM). Because strength is both muscular and a practised skill, the evidence points to heavier loads (roughly >80% 1RM), lower reps, longer rests, and frequent specific practice of the main lifts, with only modest total volume needed. Progression is driven by adding load over time, often guided by autoregulation. This contrasts with hypertrophy training, where volume dominates - here, load and skill practice on the target lifts take priority.

Common misconceptions
- Myth: You need very high volume to get strong. Actually: Maximal strength is captured at relatively low volume; heavy load and specific practice matter more than total sets.
- Myth: Getting stronger requires getting much bigger. Actually: Much of strength gain is neural and skill-based; substantial strength increases can occur with modest size change.
