Plant vs Animal Protein: Closer Than the Marketing Suggests

For muscle and most health outcomes, total protein and diet quality matter more than the plant-vs-animal source.

Evidence suggests plant and animal proteins support lean mass, strength, and bone comparably when total protein is adequate, and substituting some animal for plant protein is associated with favorable cardiometabolic markers. We grade this B because per-meal differences (leucine content, digestibility) can matter at the margins and much of the substitution evidence is observational.

  • 'Plant protein can't build muscle.' With adequate total intake and variety, it supports muscle comparably.
  • 'You must combine proteins at every meal.' Variety across the day is sufficient for most people.
  • 'Animal protein is always superior.' Differences are small when total protein is adequate.
