Unstable-Surface Training: Uses and Limits

Research consistently shows…
Training on unstable surfaces increases the balance and proprioceptive challenge and can improve balance and ankle control. However, evidence shows balance gains are partly specific to what is trained, so unstable-surface work is one tool among many rather than a universal solution, and it does not necessarily transfer to strength or unrelated tasks. Used with progression and safety, it is a useful component.
