Static vs. Dynamic Balance

The difference between holding still and staying steady in motion, and why training must address both.

Research consistently shows…

Static balance is keeping the body stable while stationary; dynamic balance is maintaining control during movement such as walking, turning, or reaching. Studies measure them separately and show training effects are partly specific to the type practiced. Because daily falls usually happen during movement, dynamic and task-specific balance deserve emphasis alongside static holds.

Common misconceptions
  • 'Standing on one leg is enough' (dynamic, moving balance must also be trained)
  • 'Static and dynamic balance are the same skill' (they transfer only partly)

  • Two or more falls in the past 12 months, or any fall with injury

  • Fear of falling severe enough to restrict daily activity
