Ankle, Hip, and Stepping Balance Strategies

The three ways the body recovers balance, and why a fast, well-placed step is the last line of defense against a fall.

Evidence suggests…

The nervous system corrects balance using ankle adjustments for small sways, hip movements for larger ones, and a protective step or grab when the center of mass leaves the base of support. Step-training programs that rehearse fast, accurate voluntary and reactive steps improve reaction time, gait, and balance and reduce falls. Training all three strategies, especially stepping, builds a layered defense.

Common misconceptions
  • 'Just don't sway' (recovery stepping is a skill worth training, not a failure)
  • 'Grabbing a rail means you failed' (a well-timed grab is a valid recovery strategy)
