Fear of Falling and Balance Confidence

Why low balance confidence itself raises fall risk, and how training can restore it.

Research consistently shows…

Fear of falling can lead people to restrict activity, which weakens muscles and balance and paradoxically increases fall risk. Exercise interventions, including Tai Chi, yoga, and multicomponent programs, can reduce fear of falling and improve balance confidence. Addressing confidence alongside physical capacity is important for keeping people active and independent.

Common misconceptions
  • 'Being cautious always keeps you safer' (over-restriction weakens the body and raises risk)
  • 'Confidence can't be trained' (graded success builds measurable balance confidence)
What we won't claim
  • Does not guarantee prevention of any fall or injury
  • Not a substitute for medical evaluation of dizziness, syncope, or unexplained falls
  • Not a substitute for mental-health care where anxiety is severe
When to seek a professional
  • Two or more falls in the past 12 months, or any fall with injury
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting during standing or movement
  • New or worsening unsteadiness, neurological symptoms, or numbness in the feet
  • Fear of falling severe enough to restrict daily activity
  • Fear of falling that severely restricts daily activities or social participation
