Balance Is Specific: Train the Task You Want to Improve

Why balance improvements transfer mainly to similar tasks, so training should resemble real-world demands.

A key principle is specificity: balance training improves most on tasks similar to those practiced, with limited transfer to dissimilar tasks. This means effective programs should include the actual conditions a person needs, standing, walking, turning, reacting, rather than assuming one drill improves all balance. It explains why varied, task-relevant practice outperforms a single exercise.
