Why progressive balance and functional exercise is the best-supported single intervention for reducing falls in older adults.

Pooled analyses of many randomized trials consistently show that exercise programs emphasizing balance and functional tasks reduce the rate of falls in community-dwelling older adults by roughly a fifth to a quarter, with larger reductions at higher doses. Programs that challenge balance and are sustained over months outperform general activity. Falls are multifactorial, so exercise reduces risk rather than eliminating it.

- 'Falls are an inevitable part of aging' (much fall risk is modifiable with training)
- 'Walking alone prevents falls' (walking helps fitness but is not sufficient balance challenge)
