Upper/Lower Split

Alternate upper-body and lower-body days to raise per-session volume while keeping each session focused.

An upper/lower split divides training into upper-body and lower-body days, usually run over 4 sessions per week so each region is trained twice. Because volume is split by region, each session can devote more sets to fewer muscles while still hitting everything 2x/week - a frequency and volume distribution well supported for hypertrophy. Evidence shows split and full-body approaches perform similarly when weekly volume matches, so the upper/lower split is best chosen when someone can train ~4 days and wants higher per-muscle volume without marathon sessions.

Common misconceptions
  • Myth: Splits are inherently better than full-body. Actually: With equal weekly volume the two match; the split just distributes volume differently across more days.
  • Myth: Each muscle needs its own dedicated day. Actually: Training a region twice weekly is ample; more frequent, higher-volume splits add little when weekly sets are equal.
