Training Intensity (Load / %1RM)

How heavy you lift relative to your max shapes whether you bias strength or size.

Research consistently shows...

Load - the weight lifted, usually expressed as a percentage of your one-rep max (%1RM) - is the classic 'intensity' variable. Landmark meta-analyses show that heavy and light loads build similar muscle size when sets are taken close to failure, but heavy loads (roughly >80% 1RM) are superior for maximal strength because strength is partly a skill practised at high loads. This dissociation lets people who cannot or prefer not to lift very heavy still gain muscle, while those chasing raw strength know they must periodically load heavy.

Common misconceptions
  • Myth: Light weights can't build muscle. Actually: Light loads taken near failure grow muscle comparably to heavy loads; only maximal-strength gains favor heavy.
  • Myth: Heavier is always better. Actually: Beyond the load needed for your goal, extra weight raises joint stress and technical risk without proportional benefit.
