Repetition Ranges

Low, moderate and high rep ranges all build muscle; they differ mainly in what else they emphasize.

Research consistently shows...

Rep range is the number of repetitions performed per set. A wide body of work shows hypertrophy is remarkably rep-range agnostic - muscle grows similarly across roughly 5 to 30+ reps when sets are hard - whereas very low reps with heavy load favor maximal strength and very high reps favor local muscular endurance. This means people can pick a rep range that suits their joints, equipment and preferences without sacrificing growth, choosing lower reps only when peak strength is the specific goal.

Common misconceptions
  • Myth: 6-12 reps is the only 'hypertrophy range'. Actually: Growth is comparable across a broad rep spectrum when effort is high; the classic range is convenient, not uniquely magic.
  • Myth: High reps only build endurance, never size. Actually: High-rep sets taken near failure build muscle much like moderate reps; they just add an endurance component.
