Power training emphasizes moving loads with high velocity and explosive intent to develop rate of force development - how quickly you can produce force. Evidence shows power-oriented resistance training improves muscular power and, importantly, functional outcomes like getting out of a chair, climbing stairs and reacting to prevent falls, with older adults among the biggest beneficiaries. It complements, rather than replaces, heavier strength work: build a strength base, then add explosive effort on a portion of sets.

  • Myth: Older adults should avoid explosive training. Actually: Appropriately dosed power training is among the most effective ways to preserve function and reduce fall risk in older adults.
  • Myth: Lifting slowly is always safer and better. Actually: For power and function, explosive intent on suitable loads yields adaptations that slow lifting cannot.
