Individual Variation & Responders

People respond to the same program differently; expected results are averages, not guarantees.

Research consistently shows...

Genetics, age, sleep, nutrition, training history and adherence all influence how much any individual gains from a given program, and studies document a wide spread of responses - from high responders to those who gain little on a specific protocol. This is why fixed promises of a set result are unscientific, and why the practical answer to a poor response is usually to adjust and persist (change volume, effort or exercise) rather than to conclude that training 'doesn't work' for you.

Common misconceptions
  • Myth: A program that worked for someone else will work identically for me. Actually: Responses vary widely; the same plan can produce large gains in one person and modest gains in another.
  • Myth: If I don't respond fast, I'm a 'non-responder' and should quit. Actually: Apparent non-response often reflects an under-dosed or ill-suited program; adjusting variables typically restores progress.
