Free-weight training uses barbells and dumbbells that you must balance and control, recruiting stabilizing muscles and transferring well to everyday and athletic tasks. It builds strength and muscle at least as effectively as machines and offers the loadability needed to keep progressing on big compound lifts. The trade-off is a higher skill and technique demand, so free weights reward learning good movement and, for heavy work, sensible safety practices.
