Research consistently shows...
Autoregulation adjusts each session's load or reps to your current readiness - using subjective effort ratings (RPE/RIR) or objective bar velocity (velocity-based training). Trials comparing autoregulated and fixed-percentage programs generally show similar or slightly better outcomes with autoregulation because it accounts for day-to-day fluctuations in strength. It is a tool for individualizing load, useful for committed trainees, while beginners can rely on simpler fixed progression first.

Common misconceptions
- Myth: Percentage-based plans are always the most precise. Actually: Your true daily max drifts; percentages of an old test can misprescribe load that autoregulation corrects.
- Myth: You need a velocity device to autoregulate. Actually: Simple reps-in-reserve self-ratings capture most of the benefit without any technology.
