Offload Worries Before Bed

Write down tomorrow’s tasks or lingering worries earlier in the evening to quiet a racing mind at bedtime.

Preliminary research suggests…

Direct trials of bedtime worry-journaling are scarce, so this habit is anchored to broader evidence that reducing pre-sleep cognitive arousal, via relaxation and mind-body practices, modestly improves sleep, and that better sleep in turn lowers rumination. Effect sizes are small-to-moderate and the evidence is indirect for journaling specifically. This is a general self-management habit, not treatment for anxiety or insomnia.

How to do it
5–10 min of writing in the early evening, as needed
This is the evidence-based dose. A shorter session still counts, it just gives partial benefit rather than the full effect.
Common misconceptions
  • “Thinking it through in bed solves it.” Problem-solving in bed tends to increase arousal.
  • “Journaling has to be long.” A short list is usually enough.
What we won't claim
  • Do not claim to diagnose, treat, or cure insomnia, sleep apnea, or any sleep disorder
  • Do not promise guaranteed, instant, or permanent improvements in sleep
  • Do not present these general hygiene techniques as clinical therapy (e.g., CBT-I) or a substitute for medical care
When to seek a professional
  • Loud snoring with witnessed gasping/choking or breathing pauses plus daytime sleepiness (possible obstructive sleep apnea), refer to a clinician
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep at least 3 nights/week for 3+ months with daytime impairment (possible chronic insomnia disorder), refer to a clinician
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness despite adequate time in bed, or falling asleep involuntarily during activities, refer to a clinician
  • Sleep problems accompanied by persistent low mood, hopelessness, or thoughts of self-harm, seek prompt professional support
