Experimental sleep-restriction and deprivation studies show a homeostatic sleep drive that accumulates with time awake and discharges during sleep, complementing circadian timing (the 'two-process' model). Controlled studies demonstrate dose-dependent performance decline with mounting sleep debt. We present this to explain daytime sleepiness, not to prescribe recovery for any disorder.

Common misconceptions
- “Sleep debt can be fully repaid in one long night.” Recovery is partial and takes time.
- “Feeling alert means you're not sleep-deprived.” Performance can decline before you notice sleepiness.

When to seek a professional

- Difficulty falling or staying asleep at least 3 nights/week for 3+ months with daytime impairment (possible chronic insomnia disorder), refer to a clinician
- Excessive daytime sleepiness despite adequate time in bed, or falling asleep involuntarily during activities, refer to a clinician
