Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF, for example contract-relax) reliably increases acute range of motion. Where it sits against other methods is the part often overstated: compared head to head with dynamic stretching and foam rolling, PNF performs about the same rather than better. Proposed mechanisms include autogenic inhibition and increased stretch tolerance, though the contribution of each is debated. PNF usually needs more effort or a partner, and can acutely reduce force like other long stretches.
