Intensity Zones: Moderate vs Vigorous

Exercise intensity, gauged by heart rate, VO2 reserve, or perceived effort, shapes the training stimulus and the adaptations you get.

Research consistently shows…

Intensity can be prescribed by %HRmax, heart-rate reserve, VO2 reserve, or rating of perceived exertion, and it strongly influences CRF adaptation; there is a minimal intensity below which VO2max gains are limited. Vigorous work tends to raise VO2peak more per minute, while moderate work is easier to sustain and accumulate. Zoning lets you deliberately target a stimulus and manage fatigue.

Common misconceptions
  • '220 minus age is exact' (it is a rough population estimate)
  • 'Harder is always better' (sustainable moderate work drives much of the benefit)
What we won't claim
  • No cure claims for any disease
  • No guaranteed outcomes or fixed numeric results for any individual
  • Does not replace prescribed medical treatment
  • Zone formulas are estimates, not exact physiological thresholds
When to seek a professional
  • Chest pain, pressure, or unusual shortness of breath during exertion
  • Fainting, dizziness, or palpitations with exercise
  • Known or suspected cardiovascular, metabolic, or renal disease without medical clearance
