Systematic reviews (Dote Pardo 2025; Thompson 2021) find debt consistently correlates with depression, anxiety and suicidality, with effects mediated by perceived control and social support and some longitudinal 'scar effects'. A cross-sectional study (Sweet 2013) links high debt-to-asset ratios to worse stress and health. Most underlying evidence is observational, so causation is not established; we grade B (evidence suggests) and emphasize the association.
